Rylie Hillegas Remembered as Investigators Examine Fatal Hempfield Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Crash

 A late-night motorcycle ride through Hempfield Township ended in unimaginable tragedy, leaving a young Greensburg man dead and a Pennsylvania community mourning another life lost on the roadway. Investigators are continuing to piece together the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash that claimed 24-year-old Rylie D. Hillegas.

According to the Westmoreland County Coroner's Office, the crash occurred shortly before midnight Friday on Baughman Hollow Road near the area where Route 66 passes over the roadway, east of Pandora Way. Coroner John Ackerman identified the victim as Rylie D. Hillegas, 24, of Greensburg. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after reports of a serious motorcycle crash involving a single vehicle.

Preliminary findings indicate that Hillegas was riding a 2002 Harley-Davidson Dyna Wide Glide eastbound when he was unable to negotiate a curve in the roadway. Investigators said the motorcycle struck a guide rail, causing him to be thrown from the bike. The impact resulted in critical injuries that required immediate medical attention at the scene.

Paramedics transported Hillegas to Westmoreland Hospital, where emergency department personnel worked to save his life. Despite those efforts, he was later pronounced dead by an emergency department physician. The devastating outcome has left family members, friends, and the Greensburg community grieving the sudden loss of a young man whose life ended far too soon.

The Westmoreland County Coroner's Office reported that Hillegas was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Coroner Ackerman stated that the official cause and manner of death remain pending until an autopsy and toxicology testing are completed. Authorities have not indicated whether speed, impairment, roadway conditions, or any other contributing factors played a role in the crash.
