 Just weeks after celebrating her high school graduation and competing on one of youth racing's biggest stages, 18-year-old Alexandria J. "Alex" Womer lost her life in a devastating crash in Schuylkill County. The heartbreaking tragedy has left her family, friends, classmates, and the soap box derby community mourning a young woman whose determination and accomplishments had already inspired many. According to Pennsylvania State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 8:16 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, along Burma Road north of Firetower Road in Blythe Township. Troopers said Alex Womer was riding in the front passenger seat of a Chevrolet Malibu traveling west when the driver lost control while negotiating a left-hand curve. Investigators reported that the vehicle rotated about 90 degrees into the eastbound lane before being struck on the passenger side by an approaching tractor-trailer.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but Womer suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead there. Authorities said the 19-year-old Pottsville man driving the Malibu was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital-East with suspected serious injuries. Two juvenile passengers, ages 16 and 17, also sustained serious injuries, while a 14-year-old boy received treatment for minor injuries. Officials have not released the truck driver's name, and no charges had been announced as the investigation continued.

Alex had only recently celebrated several important milestones. She turned 18 on July 7 and graduated from Pottsville Area High School, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life. Earlier this year, Alex captured the Super Stock Division title at the Pottsville Soap Box Derby, qualifying her for the prestigious All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship.
