An early morning burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Martinsville neighborhood Saturday, leaving one young man dead and two women wounded as investigators launched an intensive search for answers. The deadly shooting has shaken both Martinsville and neighboring Danville, where 24-year-old D'Sean Jones was identified as the victim.
According to the Martinsville Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 4:16 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, after receiving reports of shots fired in the 400 block of Fayette Street. When officers arrived, they found Jones, a Danville resident, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene as detectives immediately secured the area and began their investigation.
Police also located an adult woman at the scene who had sustained a gunshot wound. She received emergency medical treatment before being transported to a hospital for further care. Around the same time officers were responding on Fayette Street, a second adult woman arrived at SOVAH Health Martinsville with gunshot wounds that investigators believe were connected to the same incident.
Authorities have not publicly identified either of the injured women, and their medical conditions have not been released. Investigators have also withheld information about what led to the shooting, emphasizing that the case remains in its early stages. Detectives continue working to establish the sequence of events that resulted in the violence.
For several hours after the shooting, Martinsville police detectives, crime scene investigators, and patrol officers remained at the location collecting evidence, documenting the scene, and interviewing potential witnesses. Fayette Street was closed to through traffic between High Street and Peters Street while investigators processed the area for forensic evidence and searched for additional clues.
Police have not announced a possible motive or indicated whether the victims knew the person responsible for the shooting. As of the latest official update, no suspect information has been released, and no arrests have been made. Authorities continue pursuing investigative leads while reviewing evidence gathered from the scene and information provided by witnesses.
The Martinsville Police Department is encouraging anyone who witnessed the shooting or possesses information relevant to the investigation to contact Lt. Lane Clark or submit anonymous information through Crime Stoppers. Officials noted that tips leading to an arrest may qualify for a reward. Investigators hope assistance from the public will help move the case forward and identify those responsible.
As family and friends mourn D'Sean Jones, the communities of Danville and Martinsville are left grappling with the impact of another fatal act of gun violence. While detectives continue searching for answers, loved ones remember a life cut short far too soon, hoping the ongoing investigation will ultimately provide accountability and a measure of justice for everyone affected by the tragedy.
