Cinnabon Staff Member Dismissed Following Racial Incident Aimed at Somali Pair at Bay Park Square Mall
An employee of Cinnabon at Bay Park Square mall in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, was let go after a viral clip recorded her making racist comments and derogatory statements towards a Somali couple. The incident, which quickly gained traction on X and TikTok, has ignited outrage and rekindled discussions about the discrimination encountered by Somali and Muslim groups in public settings.
In the video, the worker can be seen aggressively instructing the couple to exit, repeatedly using the N-word, ridiculing the woman's hijab, and declaring her own racism. Despite the aggression directed at them, the couple kept their composure and continued to film the event. There is no indication from the video or witness accounts that the customers instigated the altercation prior to the employee's reactions.
Sawyer Carlson, a representative for Cinnabon, verified the dismissal in a statement released on Saturday. Carlson mentioned that the franchise owner took immediate action upon learning about the video. “The person shown in the footage was promptly terminated by the franchise owner. Their behavior and comments are entirely unacceptable and do not represent Cinnabon's values,” the statement indicated. The company reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a respectful and inclusive atmosphere for every patron.
Internet users have commended the couple for staying calm amidst overt harassment. Additionally, others have shown frustration that such actions took place within a service-oriented environment. Social media users also revealed the employee's identity as Crystal Wilsey, amplifying calls for accountability.
As the video remains in circulation, the event has initiated wider discussions around racism, harassment, and the lived experiences of Somali and Muslim individuals in daily public encounters. Many are hopeful that the prompt response from the franchise will remind everyone that such discriminatory actions will not be accepted.
