An inquiry into a critical event has commenced following the death of a 19-year-old biker during a police pursuit on Monday night in Sydney's inner southern region.

As reported by NSW Police, the situation began just before midnight when law enforcement attempted to stop a motorcycle traveling northbound on Southern Cross Drive in Zetland. The motorcyclist allegedly failed to halt, prompting police to initiate a chase.

Not long after, the motorcycle collided with the rear of a van positioned ahead. Officers quickly rendered first aid until the arrival of paramedics; however, the rider, named George Manos, aged 19, was pronounced dead at the site.

A crime scene has been established, and investigators from the Critical Incident Investigation Team are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the chase, the accident, and the actions of the officers involved. As part of standard procedures, an external review will be conducted for the investigation.

Officials have indicated that there were no reported injuries among the van's passengers.

Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the event or has dashcam footage to come forward as the investigation moves forward.
