The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Monday when a Jeep Liberty, traveling eastward, veered off the highway and into the median for reasons currently under investigation. This vehicle collided with a culvert, overturned, and subsequently impacted a Peterbilt semi-truck that was merging onto the interstate from an on-ramp.

Cheryl A. Martin, 63, and Perry A. Martin, 65, were pronounced dead at the scene. Both individuals were wearing seatbelts at the moment of the collision. The driver of the semi-truck remained unharmed.

The incident caused significant delays, with the eastbound lanes of I-70 shut down for several hours as the Kansas Highway Patrol conducted its investigation. Officials are focusing on determining why the Jeep left its intended path, although the exact reason is still unclear.
