Emergency responders reached the accident scene around 4:45 a.m., discovering Basden's Ford Fusion mostly stopped on the extreme left side of the roadway. Her sister, who was nearby, sustained injuries that were not life-threatening after being struck by other vehicles involved in the crash.

Preliminary inquiries imply that Basden had halted the car to switch drivers with her sibling. The vehicle was largely in a driving lane when a 2003 Toyota Camry, approaching from the far-left lane, collided with the Fusion and subsequently impacted a 2021 Toyota Camry.
