In the wake of the shocking and sorrowful death of Officer Katelyn Tully, a valued member of the Haverhill Police Department, the city of Haverhill, Massachusetts, is experiencing profound sorrow. On Friday night, the Haverhill Police Patrolman's Association confirmed the tragic news and published a heartfelt tribute that expressed the deep grief shared by both the department and the wider community.
Initial reports of a fatality on Bartlett Street led to the early morning spread of news regarding Officer Tully’s demise. While details were initially sparse, the Patrolman's Association provided confirmation shortly before noon by sharing a solemn image of a Haverhill police badge adorned with a black mourning band, a traditional symbol of loss within law enforcement when mourning a fellow officer.
The Patrolman's Association issued a statement to WHAV conveying their intense sadness regarding the loss of their friend and colleague:
"Our sister in arms passed away today. She was a dedicated officer whose influence was deeply felt by all she worked alongside. She was family, not merely a co-worker. With her quiet strength, unwavering integrity, and steadfast commitment to her profession, she set a powerful example for all of us. She approached every responsibility with grace and tenacity, persistently supporting others in their time of need."
As the investigation advanced, the officer's name was initially kept confidential by the union, city officials, and the office of Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker. Authorities have since revealed her identity as Katelyn Tully, a beloved officer known for her dedication to both her job and her community, earning the respect and admiration of all who knew her.
Officials indicated that there is no indication that Tully's death involved foul play. In accordance with procedures, city officials deferred inquiries regarding specific details to the district attorney's office. While the investigation remains active, Tucker’s Chief of Staff, Sharyn Lubas, emphasized that the circumstances surrounding the death do not appear to be suspicious.
"Our office, along with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, is conducting an investigation as we would for any death case," Lubas explained. "When a passing occurs at home and does not arouse suspicion, we prefer not to disclose information about the deceased."
Union members described Officer Tully as a devoted, altruistic, and compassionate public servant whose influence stretched far beyond the police station's limits.
According to the Patrolman's Association, she was "thoughtful, attentive, and kind-hearted – qualities that set her apart both in uniform and out." She represented the ideal traits of an outstanding officer, whether it was through her listening, assisting others, or leading with kindness. The sense of loss her absence brings cannot be fully articulated, yet her legacy continues to thrive in the hearts and lives she has touched. Her memory will remain with us always.
