Wichita officials are investigating a homicide after the body of a woman was found in a car at a residence in south Wichita. The victim has been identified as 43-year-old Rachel Johnson, a resident of Wichita.
On September 27, 2025, at approximately 5:17 p.m., the police received information about a person reported missing under questionable circumstances. Due to the gravity of the situation, homicide investigators were assigned to the case later that evening.
Family members reported seeing Johnson for the last time on the morning of September 26 at around 9:30 a.m., while she was operating her black 2014 Ford Fusion.
On September 28, authorities were led to a house located in the 1800 block of South Longford Circle. At that site, officers found Johnson’s vehicle and discovered her lifeless body inside. When they entered the home, they found a 39-year-old man in the basement, who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials noted that preliminary evidence suggests a previous domestic relationship existed between Johnson and that man.
The investigation is still actively proceeding.
Comment from Chief Joe Sullivan:
"This situation is deeply tragic. A mother has been robbed of her life due to an unreasonable and cowardly act, leaving a heartbroken family and a mourning community.
As October approaches—designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month—we are reminded of the persistent impact of domestic violence, which affects many people, often in silence and away from public view.
If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please do not hesitate to call 911 immediately. If it is unsafe to alert authorities right away, seek assistance from trusted local organizations like Harbor House or the Wichita Family Crisis Center when you can.
No individual should face fear within their own home. Help is available. You are not alone."
Police urge anyone with information to get in touch with the WPD Homicide Section at 316-268-4407 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
